A 25-year-old woman, who consumed rat poison, developed severe acute liver damage within 72 hours, with dangerously elevated liver enzymes, high bilirubin levels, deranged INR and signs pointing toward imminent liver failure.
The medical team immediately initiated centrifugal plasma exchange (cPLEX), an advanced blood purification therapy designed to remove harmful toxins and inflammatory molecules more efficiently than conventional plasma exchange techniques. After four sessions of cPLEX, the patient showed remarkable recovery, with liver parameters gradually normalising and her overall condition stabilising.
Doctors at KIMS Sikhara emphasised that early intervention within the first 72 hours significantly improves survival outcomes in acute liver injury cases. The hospital now offers cPLEX therapy for acute liver failure, alcoholic hepatitis, drug-induced liver injury and poisoning-related complications, providing a critical bridge to recovery when liver transplantation may not be immediately possible.
